Lake Como, in Northern Italy’s Lombardy region, continues to be one of the most sought out destinations by Mapps clients, year after year. Set against the foothills of the dramatic Italian Alps, and only a 45 minute drive from Milan, the lake area is home to the most elegant villas, scenic small towns and fragrant gardens.

This past September I decided to head back to Northern Italy after a 4 year hiatus and check out the brand new Villa Passalaqua hotel, as well as the elegant Mandarin Oriental and Il Sereno Hotel.

We spent our 4 days in Lake Como lounging by the pool, cruising the lake and eating and drinking way too much pasta and Barolo wine than we needed. Below, I share some snaps from my iPhone and a few of my favorite spots. —

ELISA REPORTS BACK ON HER COUPLE'S GETAWAY TO ITALY

September is my favorite time of year to go to Europe. The weather is in the low 80’s, the mass tourist crowd is gone but still busy enough to have a buzzy vibe and you can finally score a table at the latest hotspots with ease… well, most of the time. With all five children settled back into their respective schools, we decided to pack our bags and head to Italy for ten nights, dividing our time between the island of Capri and the city of Florence with a delish pizza lunch stop in chaotic Napoli. We spent our days in Capri lounging poolside or at various beach clubs with long, lazy lunches or on a boat, island hopping. In Florence, it was all about living like a local and immersing ourselves in the food, the wine and the culture. To say we lived la dolce vita, would be an understatement and it served as a wonderful reminder to both of us why it is so important to continue to carve time for each other away from the craziness of our busy lives. LUNCH HOTSPOTS

GYPSEA: The all-new “Bohemian Beach Club” dropped anchor this past fall. The dress code is barefoot and salty hair. The restaurant, which is right on the beach, is adorned with shades of blue in homage to the Caribbean sea and Atlantic Ocean, with comfy benches and large mismatched cushions, untreated furniture and wood with a saltwater patina creating a chic, laid-back, end-of-the earth feel.

LE TOINY: Even if you’re not staying at the hotel, don’t miss the hidden paradise on Toiny Bay. The menu rotates regularly and offers dishes based on fish, grilled meat and refreshing salads. Enjoy a truly relaxing feet in the sand, lunch under the Paillottes.

NIKKI BEACH: On Sundays, the posh beach club turns into a table-dancing day party complete with bottle service, model-esque waiters, and oversize sushi boats. Stay through the weekend, you don’t want to miss this one.

SHELLONA: Watch the sunset with your feet in the sand at the revamp of beach bar Do Brazil, an island institution. The Shellona sunset is a little flashier than its former iteration, but that’s fine. Nature is the real star here.

THE SAND BAR: The Sand is the culinary heart and soul of Eden Rock Hotel. Signature Sand classics include… truffle pizza, crispy salmon and caramelized foie-gras, caviar and more.

BONITO: Latin-French fare in the form of ceviche, tiraditos, and an abundance of truffle oil, plus an extensive menu of creative cocktails served alongside unbeatable views of Gustavia Harbor.

LA GUERITE: This local gem transports you to St Tropez. Make a reservation for Saturday night and be prepared to get up and dance.

L’ISOLA: Beloved by both locals and visitors, this Southern Italian favorite is the perfect spot for a romantic dinner. You won’t be sitting by the sea, but you’ll also get some of the best dishes on the island.

OREGA: A newcomer on the gourmet scene in Saint Barth, this restaurant quickly developed a stellar reputation for their Franco-Japanese fusion concept.

TAMARIN: Island favorite set in a magical garden under the shade of a 200-year-old tamarind tree with a distinct French-Thai vibe.

AFTER HOURS HOTSPOTS

BAGATELLE: An offshoot of the original in New York, the cocktails flow and the crowd gets similarly rowdy, minus the costumes.

LE TI: The raucous, kitschy nightclub is a rite of passage for first-timers. Waiters whisk you into a secret back room, set you up with costumes like you’re going to Coachella, and send you off onto the dance floor.

TRAVEL SPOTLIGHT: NAPA'S FAMOUS CHEF POPS UP IN OJAI, CALIFORNIA THIS WINTER

The Restaurant at Meadowood Napa is taking their famous show on the road this winter. From January 6 to February 28, 2021, The Farmhouse at Ojaj Valley Inn and Spa will welcome Chef Christopher Kostow for a pop-up Winter Residency.

Chef Kostow will present a six-course meal for the senses reflective of the Michelin Guide 3-star experience at The Restaurant at Meadowood in Napa Valley. The dinner will feature local ingredients grown in both Napa and Ojai that celebrate the stories of the artisans, growers, and foragers of these dynamic California valleys.

$495 per person includes wine pairings, exclusive of tax. Reservations are required and seating is extremely limited. Guests will be seated exclusively with the parties they book with rather than a communal dining table.

About Christopher Kostow

Christopher Kostow is the critically acclaimed chef of The Restaurant at Meadowood in St. Helena, California and the third youngest chef to ever receive three Michelin stars. Kostow draws upon his own American upbringing and the singular beauty and bounty of the Napa Valley to cook food that is thoughtful, personal, and in concert with his community and collaborators.

Christopher, a Chicago native, graduated from Hamilton College with a degree in philosophy before moving to the kitchen. He has cooked with celebrated chefs such as Trey Foshee of Georges at the Cove in San Diego, Campton Place in San Francisco with Daniel Humm and Le Jardin des Sens in Montpellier, France. MIRROR LAKE: Mirror Lake is what makes Lake Placid a standout from other Northeast ski towns. In the summer it is a haven for water sports and fishermen as well as for walkers and joggers who loop around the scenic three mile path. In the winter, the lake is filled with recreational ice skaters, snowshoers, ice fishing, cross-country skiers, kids playing pick-up hockey games and both dog sled and toboggan rides.

Bartlett’s Farm: Family owned farm with 40 greenhouses filled with organic greens, hothouse tomatoes, flowering plants and fragrant herbs. On your way out, pick up food from their farm to go menu and make an epic picnic basket for the beach.

Boarding House: American fare served on either their scenic patio, chic bar or cozy cellar dining room. We are big fans of their weekend brunch.

Cisco Brewers: Island staple for great local beers, creative cocktails, live music and delicious food trucks. It was love at first sight for us when we tried their raspberry frose with estate grown mint and the truck from 167 Raw.

Cru: Stylish hot spot, right on the water, offering a sophisticated raw bar and a very happening cocktail scene.

Dune: A fabulous date night spot with an exotic quartzite bar, charming patio, an extensive selection of handcrafted cocktails, wines and a farm to table menu of seasonal goodness. We will take the Caeser salad and grey lady oysters please.

Galley Beach: an awesome spot to end the day, toes in sand with cocktails and shared plates.

Jack and Charlie’s: While everyone will tell you to go to Juice for ice cream, we are telling you to go to Jack and Charlie’s… trust us!

Lemon Press: Grab an go smoothies and fresh pressed juices.

Lola 41: Chic hot spot that draws crowds craving their sushi and bistro menu. They recently unveiled their latest outpost in Palm Beach, Florida. Do not skip their rolls or truffle fries. Sounds weird , we know… but it works!

Pearl: Seafood with an innovative asian fusion twist. Sichuan Pork Dumplings, Lobster Wok, Tuna Tartare… yum!

Pizzeria Gemelle: Playful brick oven pizzeria serving up classics and creatives as well as salads & house-made gelatos. Order the Annabella: mozz, sliced guanciale, black truffle and cracked egg. You are most welcome.

Provisions: Hands down the best sandwich shop on island. We could seriously eat their tomato mozzarella with balsamic sandwich for lunch everyday.

Seasons: New American seasonal foods & over 500 American-made wines, served by candlelight. Reserve a table in the patio garden well in advance to up the romance game.

Straight Wharf: Summer seafood classics paired with wine on a waterfront porch.

The Beet: Best chopped salads for lunch on the go.

Castle Hill Inn: The Inn provides the highest level of luxury in Newport and is less than a ten minute drive to the downtown area. Fluke: On the more refined and pricey end of the dining spectrum. Aside from the many fresh seafood options there are plenty of vegetable dishes all made with local ingredients coupled with a stellar list of artisan wines.

Meg’s Milk Bar: hole in the wall with perfectly brewed coffee, omelets and sandwiches.

Perro Salado: Serving an innovative brunch and dinner menu, this off the beaten path restaurant offers locally sourced Mexican cuisine and is best suited for small groups due to limited seating. Highly recommend the house margarita, sticky ribs and fish tacos.

Scarpetta: Located at Gurneys, this italian fave has outposts in NYC, London, Miami, Las Vegas and The Hamptons. We love their signature pasta dish and San Remo drink.

Stoneacre Brasserie: A neighborhood favorite with a daily changing menu featuring the richest and brightest seasonal ingredients and a wine list that is cultivated to highlight boutique French wine producers. We love this for Sunday Brunch or dinner.

The Lawn: This outdoor restaurant, ideal for lunch or dinner, is located at The Castle Hill Inn. Order a dark and stormy and sit back on the adirondack chairs while you take in the views of the East Bay. The delicious spinach orzo salad is a perfect complement to their famous surf and turf burger and lobster roll with onion string toppings. 

The Clarke Cooke House: In the heart of Bannister's Wharf, this famous 3 floor downtown staple serves up traditional 5 star New England fare.The third floor is jacket required, while the first floor after 9pm turns into an adult only cocktail space called The Boom Boom Room. 

The Mooring and Bowen 22: These sister restaurants serve up the best seafood in town and are located on the marina promising great people watching and the opportunity to make friends with someone who has a killer yacht.

The Cliff Walk Terrace: Located at The Chanler, it is the perfect grown up spot for a sophisticated lunch after a stroll on the cliff walk. Be prepared to take in crazy views and celebrity sightings.  Manners required.

Cliff Walk: This 3.5 mile, sometimes rugged recreational trail boosts the best views of Newport. 

Gilded Age Mansion Tours: The Breakers provides a guided tour, while other mansions are visited at your own pace.

Kayak & Paddelboard: Ed Sanchas is the genius behind Newport's first kayak and paddle board delivery business. They take all the hassle out of renting water-sports equipment and bring the kayaks and paddle boards right to you. Newport Polo Club: There are matches every Saturday in the summer and the tailgate is an important part of the scene so come prepared with a blanket and a picnic basket of champagne, wine and cheese.

Newport Sailing School: We recommend taking a 90 minute daytime or sunset private tour of Newport to see all of it’s glory from the open waters.

Ryan’s Amusements: Downtown arcade aka kids paradise, parents hell.

St. Mary’s Church: Religious or not, this historic church on William Street has some pretty cool bragging rights since it hosted the wedding of President Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier. 

Surf: Rhody Surf specializes in teaching surfers the basics of surfing in a fun, yet educational private or group surf lesson.  The popular program is Newport’s only Surf Camp and is conveniently located on the popular Easton’s Beach (aka First Beach), less than a mile from Downtown Newport.

The International Tennis Hall of Fame: Home to exhibitions of historic memorabilia as well as several beautifully maintained tennis courts. We recommend booking a time slot in advance should you want to play on these famous courts.

ARCHETYPE: This neighborhood farm-to-table spot serves up killer dishes all day long. The lemon ricotta pancakes draw long brunch lines, while the crab cakes and tater tots hit the spot after a long day of vino. 

BISTRO JEANTY: Yountville X Paris here. Chef Philippe Jeanty has been turning out greatest hits for over 20 years. We highly recommend the French onion soup and coq au vin.

CICCIO: Owned by local wine producers, this family-owned casual Italian spot in Yountville serves their house rosé, white, and red blends, alongside homemade pastas, wood-fired pizzas, and organic garden greens. Walk-ins only.

EVANGELINE: Request a table on the outside patio that is draped in gorgeous wisteria and indulge in French classics done right like shrimp etouffee and steak frites.

FARMSTEAD RESTAURANT AT LONG MEADOW RANCH: Centered around an open kitchen, Farmstead delivers a unique experience focused on family-style dining and a farm-to-table menu sourced from the estates winery and farm. Checking in...La Reserve owner Michel Reybier kept a journal for several years of everything he would want in a hotel of his own, starting with the slippers and going all the way to the flowers and hand-selected vintage books in the library. While the location put me in the heart of the Champs, the 40 room hotel felt more like the home of my chic friend with Eiffel Tower views… delivering the ultimate romantic hideaway in one of my favorite cities in the world.

PRO TIP: Book the 11am time slot, block off an hour and then head over to Le Servan or Double Dragon, just a few doors down for an epic lunch. The restaurants open their doors at noon and do not take reservations, so timing accordingly is imperative.
