THE POSTCARD: MALLORCA, SPAIN

Mallorca is known for its beautiful coastline, secluded coves, limestone mountains, Spanish architecture, wineries and fresh produce farms and stunning beaches. My 14 year old daughter Hadley and I spent 4 nights exploring the breezy Balearic island. Below, I share some of the highlights, and no, she did not drink my Rose.

ELISA'S MOTHER / DAUGHTER TRIP TO LONDON & PARIS

Last month I headed back to Europe, this time with my youngest daughter Hadley,age 14, by my side. We spent 9 days between London and Paris, two of my favorite cities in the world. This was Hadley’s first time to both destinations so I wanted to make this experience super special for her. I created a modern day, classic itinerary that hit all the must city highlights and paired them with chic dining options and bought tickets to the hottest museum exhibits in town. It was such a gift to have this alone time with my baby girl. I spend so much time planning our family holidays that I forget to carve out time for one on one trips. WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Getting Here: We flew to London Heathrow Airport and then took the Eurostar Train to Paris which took under 2.5 hours. We flew home from Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris.

Ideal Planning Lead Time: 6 weeks

Travel Requirements: England and France have dropped all the testing requirements and paperwork to enter the country if you are vaccinated.

Elisa’s Notes: London and Paris were jammed packed. I was so happy we had a buttoned up itinerary that included skip the line tickets. The lines to enter most museums were an hour long or same day tickets were sold out. Traffic right now in both cities was pretty hectic, so having an itinerary that focuses on one area of the city at a time is key.

TOP FIVE PLACES TO EAT & DRINK IN PALM BEACH, FLORIDA

The island of Palm Beach is home to legendary resorts, exquisite mansions and historic landmarks, including Henry Flagler's former residence, now the Flagler Museum. Lined with stately palm trees, the shopping nirvana of Worth Avenue is known worldwide. Palm Beach Island's Gilded Age architecture will captivate, as will the chic restaurants and a winter highlight, the Palm Beach Food & Wine Festival.

THREE SISTERS: signature fine dining located within the Lodge at Blackberry Mountain. Think pan-seared fingerling trout with roasted carrots and toasted amaranth. The restaurant also features a curated list from VicePresident of Food & Beverage Andy Chabot personal favorites, which include small, family-run wineries that make world-class wine without undue manipulation.

BEHIND THE SCENES: EASY BREEZY FAMILY SKI TIME... WEST COAST STYLE

Whoever said “ The family that skis together, stays together” had clearly never skied with my crew. In my early years of motherhood, I rented a home for 4 months every winter in Southern Vermont to fulfill the dream, but the reality was quite the opposite and I always ended up feeling frustrated by the experience. With one child more interested in the lodge hot chocolate then the slopes, one who cared about fashion over form and one who found her parents too slow, a family ski trip just never seemed to go well for us. Within one hour on the mountain we would end up finding ourselves taking turns skiing with one child while the other parent entertained the other children in the lodge as our home was 15 minutes away by car. With the cost of ski passes, ski school and rentals, logistics and sheer amount of “ stuff “ that I was driving to and from the mountain, the idea of packing up our lives to ski out west for school break over the seamless shores of the islands seemed absolutely daunting…until I finally made it to Montage Deer Valley. The glorious full service, ski-in, ski-out resort took all the work out of a ski trip for this Mama and our family had the most amazing time together, and apart. The details below —

ZAGREB

After a quick layover in Amsterdam, I arrived in Zagreb. Known as ‘Little Vienna’ due to its three centuries under Austro-Hungarian and Habsburg rule, I found Zagreb to be a sophisticated city with imperial architecture, cobble stone streets, a vibrant dining and art scene and lush parks. The city is a cultural lovers paradise as it is host to an impressive array of museums, galleries and theaters.

MAPPS TIP: Don’t miss the Museum of Contemporary Art or dinner at Pod Zidom Bistro.

ISTRIA

Istria, the largest peninsula within the Adriatic Sea is one of Croatia's most sought out after regions as it is a true paradise for sun seekers, history buffs, foodies, winos and cyclists. The region’s culture is heavily influenced by their nearby neighbor Italy. We hiked and biked two National Parks… but the true highlight for me was going truffle hunting with the sweetest dogs followed by an epic truffle lunch accompanied by local vineyard wines.

MAPPS TIP: Don’t miss having a picnic lunch at Kabola Winery or dinner at Meneghetti Winery. Both fantastic.

HVAR

The island of Hvar is the queen of the Croatian Dalmatian islands and the star of summer. Beaches, boat excursions, hiking, nightlife, lavender fields and wine tastings on repeat over here. Added bonus: we got to test out the brand new Masalina Resort and Spa, the newly renovated Hvar Beach Club and had the most divine seafood lunch on the island of Korcula.

DUBROVNICK

Last on the Croatia road trip was Dubrovnik, an ancient walled medieval city located on the Adriatic Sea. This UNESCO world heritage site was under threat for years as cruise ships overran the ports with tourists desperate for a photo opportunity as the town was the backdrop for the award winning series Game Of Thrones. One silver lining in this pandemic is there are no cruise ships allowed in at this time which allowed us to explore all it’s beauty without the crowds. We hiked, kayaked, ate oysters and swam in the gorgeous Adriatic Sea. A special thanks to Ivan and the team at Villa Dubrovnik for his incredible hospitality.

MAPPS TIP: Wake up early to beat the crowds and climb to the top of the walled city. Record time is 9 min, average is 90. They said we did in 28… I demand a recount!

MONTENEGRO

For the grand finale we crossed the Croatian border and sailed into Montenegro, a Balkan country with rugged mountains, medieval villages and a narrow strip of beaches along its Adriatic coastline. There are fabulous hiking trails, vineyards and the nearby medieval village of Kotor is the perfect spot for an authentic seaside lunch.

We arrived just in time for the grand opening of the first-ever European location for the luxury brand One&Only Hotels. The resort is part of the larger Portonovi luxury lifestyle development which features a helipad and a 238-berth D-Marin super yacht marina.

The sheltered location on the spectacular Boka Bay positions guests to be able to explore the dramatic coastline with ease on either a yacht or sailboat.

MAPPS TIP: Nikki Beach just opened, roughly a 20 min ride by boat… a super spot for Sunday brunch or a rose all day lunch anytime.

JUST CHECKED OUT: COMO PARROT CAY

COMO PARROT CAY is an award-winning Turks and Caicos luxury resort set on its own private island. With 1,000 unspoiled acres and over four miles of beach, they deliver true foot-in-the-sand luxury.

ROOMS: The enclosed development is comprised of 3, 4,5 and 6 bedroom private residences, 1 and 2 bedroom beachfront villas and 46 rooms/suites. We personally love the 1 bedroom Como suites and beachfront villas. For an epic celebration, renting Keith Richard’s private home Rocky Point is a must!

GETTING HERE: After arriving at Providenciales International Airport (PLS), guests are driven 10 minutes to Leeward Marina where they depart on a 25 minute boat ride to the private island of Parrot Cay.

ACTIVITIES: Guests can enjoy a wide variety of non-motorized and motorized water sports including fishing excursions. There are bicycles / golf carts to roam the property paths, one family pool and one adult only pool, fitness center, spa, tennis courts and a kids club.

DINING: There are two restaurants, Terrace which specializes in modern Italian fare and Lotus which focuses on light Caribbean-inflected lunchtime fare and contemporary Asian dishes at night. The resort also hosts various pop up dining experiences several times a month.

BEST TIME TO VISIT: November to August as hurricane season runs from early September to end of October.

Feliz ano nuevo! I recently headed to Mexico to scout the Punta Mita and Nayarit area, a remote 192-mile-long coastline nestled between the majestic Sierra Madre mountains and the rugged Pacific Ocean. This jungle of love is tapped to be the newest hotspot once travel restrictions begin to loosen and the Covid -19 nightmare ends.

BEHIND THE SCENES: A COVID FREE ISLAND GETAWAY

The laid back island of Anguilla has always been a crowd favorite due to it’s gorgeous beaches, endless land and sea activities, warm hospitality, farm to sea dining and a location that combines convenience with seclusion. While all of these attributes are still the main draw… these days the islands Covid free status has boosted their bragging rights and placed them at the top of the winter travel charts.

When Covid-19 entered the United States and surrounding islands this past March, Anguilla sprung into action quickly and locked down for months which proved to be quite successful. During the height of the pandemic, they only recorded 2 positive cases and after re-opening this past month with strict protocols in place, they are happy to report the island is still Covid free since this past May.

We are thrilled that Anguilla is now welcoming back visitors and are incredibly impressed with the conditions that they have put in place. Pre-entry requirements includes travelers submitting a negative PCR test taken within three to five days prior to arrival and upon arrival, another PCR test will be administered and a second test will be given on day 10 or 14. Guests based upon their assigned bubble will be given access to a variety of approved amenities and activities on each day, including select restaurants, golfing, scuba diving, kayaking, excursions to Prickly Pear, Sandy Island, and Scilly Cay, and more but advanced reservations are required, and transportation from an approved operator only will be provided.

BEHIND THE SCENES: SUMMERING LIKE A ROCKEFELLER

Lake Kora, a legendary oasis with its own private 500-acre lake tucked into the Adirondacks,  provides the ultimate getaway. The history behind this spot is as fun to dive into as the lake’s refreshing waters, with ownership only changing hands four times since the turn of the last century. Back then, families whose last names were at the forefront of our collective consciousness, signifying power, taste and vast fortunes – Rockefellers, Astors, Morgans and Vanderbilts among them — built mountaintop, lakeside “camps” in Upstate New York to escape summertime heat and urban life. By most accounts, Lake Kora was the “grandest” of  Great Camps. This sprawling, timbered compound was purchased by Teddy Roosevelt’s Lieutenant Governor, Timothy Woodruff and tales of Woodruff’s ownership are of legendary hedonism in the woods with stories of the most unexpected amusements such as gondolas imported from Venice plying the lake, semi-tamed bears resided near the cabins, telephone service as early as 1903. Subsequent owners (neighboring Vanderbilts among them) indulged similar eccentricities – at one time, tame deer visited daily for freshly made blueberry pancakes.

Today, Lake Kora is but a few of the Great Camps which remain in private hands and open to the public since just 2015. Its present owner made a conscientious decision to open this captivating, private, and historical estate to a limited number of exclusive bookings during the peak summer and early fall months.
